Indicators of Innovation in Canadian Natural Resource Industries

Abstract

This report develops a set of indicators of innovation in Canadian natural resource industries and uses them to assess trends over time and compare Canada’s performance to the all-industries average and to natural resource industries in other OECD countries. Innovation indicators are organized across eight areas: R&D, skills, machinery and equipment, productivity, foreign direct investment, technological balance of payments, internet use, and incidence of innovation. The report finds that on most indicators, Canadian natural resource industries perform at or above the all-industries average, and show average performance relative to natural resource industries in other countries.
