Creating a More Efficient Labour Market

Abstract

This publication presents the report and proceedings of an invitational stakeholder Roundtable held in Ottawa on February 26–27, 2001, hosted by the Centre for the Study of Living Standards at the request of Human Resources Development Canada. The Roundtable brought together over 70 participants from business, labour, academia, government, and civil society to examine the recommendations of the Expert Panel on Skills and gauge support for future action. Discussion was organized around four topics: improving the effectiveness of sector councils; promoting a more efficient labour market through better labour market information; immigration and the needs of the Canadian labour market; and improving the effectiveness of the apprenticeship system. The report synthesizes stakeholder deliberations and makes recommendations on each topic, and is accompanied by the full proceedings including the keynote address by the Honourable Jane Stewart, Minister of Human Resources Development Canada.
