Productivity Gains from Worker Well-Being in Europe

Abstract

Using matched data from the European Working Conditions Survey (EWCS 2010 and 2015 waves) and Eurostat Structural Business Statistics for 30 European countries (68 industries), this article finds that industries where worker well-being is higher — measured by job satisfaction and a multidimensional job quality index — have higher levels of labour productivity. This implies that well-being in the workplace contributes to aggregate productivity, and that policies fostering worker well-being can contribute to productivity growth.
