Foreign-born workers often lack the necessary information to learn about opportunities in the Canadian labour market, which can prevent highly-skilled workers from finding employment in their field, to the detriment of the Canadian economy. We examine the services provided to immigrants in Canada by federal and provincial governments, and the large role played by the non-profit sector in facilitating the delivery of information and services to immigrants in order to lessen the informational barriers to immigrant employment. We further identify best practices from Canada, which include establishing national standards for the recognition of foreign qualification; simplifying the delivery of services by using one-stop shops or single-points-of-contact; involving local stakeholders in the development of policy and delivery of service; and maintaining a flexible immigration policy. Identifying and addressing the specific needs of newcomers to Canada has had a strong positive impact on their labour market outcomes. Ce rapport tire des leçons de l’expérience canadienne en matière d’immigration susceptibles d’améliorer les résultats des immigrants sur le marché du travail et d’atténuer les obstacles liés aux enjeux d’information sur le marché du travail. Les travailleurs nés à l’étranger manquent souvent de l’information nécessaire pour connaître les possibilités offertes par le marché du travail canadien, ce qui peut empêcher des travailleurs hautement qualifiés de trouver un emploi dans leur domaine, au détriment de l’économie canadienne. Nous examinons les services offerts aux immigrants au Canada par les gouvernements fédéral et provinciaux, ainsi que le rôle important joué par le secteur sans but lucratif pour faciliter la prestation d’information et de services aux immigrants afin de réduire les obstacles informationnels à leur emploi. Nous cernons également des pratiques exemplaires canadiennes, notamment l’établissement de normes nationales pour la reconnaissance des qualifications étrangères; la simplification de la prestation des services au moyen de guichets uniques ou de points de contact uniques; la participation des intervenants locaux à l’élaboration des politiques et à la prestation des services; et le maintien d’une politique d’immigration souple. Le fait de cerner et de répondre aux besoins particuliers des nouveaux arrivants au Canada a eu une incidence positive marquée sur leurs résultats sur le marché du travail.
