The second stage of a major CSLS project on the state of living standards and quality of life in Canada, coordinated by Lars Osberg (Dalhousie University) and Andrew Sharpe (CSLS), involving nearly fifty researchers from Canada, the United States and Europe and overseen by a research advisory committee of more than thirty-five representatives of government departments and agencies and non-profit and private sector organisations. It is widely believed that the standard of living and quality of life of Canadians, while high internationally, had improved little or even deteriorated; the conference examined whether that was an accurate portrayal, across dimensions of economic and social well-being. The CSLS Index of Economic Well-being for Canada was unveiled here. Sessions covered trends in economic well-being, indicators of well-being, natural and human capital, children and families, social cohesion, quality of life indices, poverty and consumption distribution, the quality of working life, health and inequality, and personal security.

Deuxième étape d’un important projet du CENV sur l’état des niveaux de vie et de la qualité de vie au Canada, coordonné par Lars Osberg (Université Dalhousie) et Andrew Sharpe (CENV), auquel ont participé près de cinquante chercheurs du Canada, des États-Unis et d’Europe. On croit généralement que le niveau de vie et la qualité de vie des Canadiens, bien qu’élevés à l’échelle internationale, se sont peu améliorés voire détériorés; la conférence visait à vérifier cette perception à travers diverses dimensions du bien-être économique et social. L’Indice du bien-être économique du CENV y a été dévoilé. Les séances ont porté sur les tendances du bien-être économique, les indicateurs de bien-être, le capital naturel et humain, les enfants et les familles, la cohésion sociale, les indices de qualité de vie, la pauvreté, la qualité de vie au travail, la santé et la sécurité personnelle.
