The Friendship Centres play a pivotal role in community and economic development by providing training and employment opportunities, facilitating social development, and building human and resource capacity for Aboriginal Canadians. Better labour market information, and better use of existing LMI, can facilitate their work. The three most important sources of LMI for Aboriginal Canadians are the Labour Force Survey, National Household Survey, and Aboriginal Peoples Survey. The report identifies the exclusion of the Aboriginal population living on reserve in all Statistics Canada surveys except the National Household Survey and the Census as the most important lacuna in Canadian Aboriginal labour market information. The report concludes that despite the many gaps, there is a wealth of Aboriginal LMI available in Canada, at the national, regional and local levels, that can be used by Friendship Centres to better develop and target programs and services to the urban Aboriginal population. Ce rapport, préparé pour les centres d’amitié du Canada, présente un survol détaillé et une évaluation des sources disponibles d’information sur le marché du travail (IMT) concernant les Autochtones canadiens. Les centres d’amitié jouent un rôle essentiel dans le développement communautaire et économique en offrant des possibilités de formation et d’emploi, en facilitant le développement social et en renforçant les capacités humaines et matérielles des Autochtones canadiens. Une meilleure information sur le marché du travail, ainsi qu’une meilleure utilisation de l’IMT existante, peuvent faciliter leur travail. Les trois sources d’IMT les plus importantes pour les Autochtones canadiens sont l’Enquête sur la population active, l’Enquête nationale auprès des ménages et l’Enquête auprès des peuples autochtones. Le rapport relève l’exclusion de la population autochtone vivant en réserve de toutes les enquêtes de Statistique Canada, à l’exception de l’Enquête nationale auprès des ménages et du Recensement, comme la lacune la plus importante de l’information sur le marché du travail des Autochtones canadiens. Le rapport conclut que, malgré les nombreuses lacunes, il existe une abondance d’IMT autochtone disponible au Canada, aux échelles nationale, régionale et locale, que les centres d’amitié peuvent utiliser pour mieux élaborer et cibler leurs programmes et services destinés à la population autochtone urbaine.
