It develops a theoretical framework and mathematical decomposition to analyze the gap between labour productivity growth and median wage growth. The gap is decomposed into components related to the labour share of income, the gap between average and median wages (reflecting inequality), and price deflator differences. The report finds that the gap has strengthened workers’ nominal bargaining position in some respects while the distribution of productivity gains has become increasingly unequal, with median wages consistently lagging productivity. Ce rapport examine l’écart entre la productivité et le salaire médian au Canada de 1976 à 2019, préparé pour Emploi et Développement social Canada. Il élabore un cadre théorique et une décomposition mathématique pour analyser l’écart entre la croissance de la productivité du travail et la croissance du salaire médian. L’écart est décomposé en éléments liés à la part du travail dans le revenu, à l’écart entre le salaire moyen et le salaire médian (reflétant l’inégalité), et aux différences de déflateurs de prix. Le rapport conclut que cet écart a renforcé la position de négociation nominale des travailleurs à certains égards, tandis que la répartition des gains de productivité est devenue de plus en plus inégale, le salaire médian accusant un retard constant par rapport à la productivité.
