This article presents evidence on long-run TFP trends from a multi-country dataset covering the U.S., Euro area, UK, and Japan from 1890 to 2015 (extending the Bergeaud-Cette-Lecat database). It identifies two major productivity waves (electrification and the ICT revolution) and documents the persistent nature of the current TFP slowdown. After adjusting for the quality of factor inputs, most of the slowdown remains unexplained. The article argues that demographic headwinds and secular stagnation in innovation provide the best available explanation for the current slow-growth environment.

Cet article présente des données probantes sur les tendances à long terme de la PMF à partir d’un ensemble de données multi-pays couvrant les États-Unis, la zone euro, le Royaume-Uni et le Japon de 1890 à 2015 (étendant la base de données Bergeaud-Cette-Lecat). Il identifie deux grandes vagues de productivité (l’électrification et la révolution des TIC) et documente la nature persistante du ralentissement actuel de la PMF. Après ajustement pour la qualité des intrants de facteurs, l’essentiel du ralentissement reste inexpliqué. L’article soutient que les vents contraires démographiques et la stagnation séculaire de l’innovation fournissent la meilleure explication disponible pour l’environnement de faible croissance actuel.
